Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dubai
Overview
I took part in an online design thinking programme run by the School of Design and Architecture at Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dubai, under Dr Shaji Panicker. Working in a team of eight students, we took a problem through the first three stages of design thinking: Empathise, Define and Ideate.
Our first problem was orbital debris. It proved unfeasible in the time frame, so the team replaced it with one closer to home: student study habits. We framed it around phone distraction and proposed bringing active-learning methods together in a single study app.
Process
Three stages of design thinking, and one change of problem along the way.
01
Empathise
After dropping orbital debris as unfeasible in the time available, the team turned to a problem we could study first-hand: how students actually study, and what pulls their attention away.
02
Define
Framed the problem around phone distraction, and wrote it up as a final problem statement and a How Might We statement.
03
Ideate
Proposed combining active-learning methods in one study app, and presented the concepts in the team's ideation deck.
